New technology officer role for NHS England

The decision was revealed in a leaked email from the organisation’s chief executive Simon Stevens. NHS England are yet to comment on the decision, but have confirmed the move is taking place.

According to the message, the CITO will support local health and care systems to implement core digital standards and transform public access to information tools and services.

No timescale has been set for the appointment of the role, however Kelsey announced in September that he would be stepping down from his role at the end of year.

Once a new candidate is appointed, they will be expected to chair the National Information Board (NIB), while working to ensure technology investments in national funded programs are fully realised.

The email informed that the CITO will take specific responsibility for commissioning ’modern data services’ designed to provide patients, commissioners and clinicians with analytic resources and technology programmes that will support their needs.

The CITO will be expected to lead development around transparency, ensuring new standards relating to data security are embedded and can enable information to be shared in a way that benefits patients but does not compromise their confidentiality.
