The proposed nursing associate role has the potential to ‘transform’ the nursing and care workforce, according to Health Education England (HEE).
Following a consultation on the implementation of the new role, Professor Lisa Bayliss-Pratt, director of nursing and deputy director of education and quality at HEE said that there is a ‘real appetite’ for nursing associates that the HEE believes can ’play a key role in the delivery of patient care’.
The consultation received over 1,000 responses from patients, members of the public and a wide range of organisations including professional bodies, trade unions, health and social care providers and commissioners of healthcare and showed a positive response to the new role, which will sit alongside existing nursing care support workers and fully-qualified registered nurses to deliver hands-on care.
Professor Lisa Bayliss-Pratt added: “The role is neither a panacea for future workforce supply, or a substitute for increasing the supply of graduate registered nurses – and throughout the process we sought to reassure people that patient safety remains paramount and is a determining factor that underlines the role.
“We do need to protect what we value across the nursing and care profession but we also need to collectively agree that we can’t always hold on to what we have done in the past – change is inevitable. The role will play an important part in the delivery of future healthcare and meet the diverse health needs of people up and down the country.”
HEE now intends to appoint a number of test sites to trial the implementation of the nursing associate role, with plans to recruit 1,000 students in 2017.

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
