Cameron reveals new targets to limit the overuse of antibiotics

Prime Minister David Cameron has called for UK doctors to reduce the number of inappropriate prescriptions of antibiotics, announcing new targets to limit overuse.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing global concern, as health experts warn that over prescription of the drugs could render them useless to treat a number of infections.

A government commissioned report produced by Lord O'Neill has warned that a failure to tackle antibiotic resistance could lead to 10 million deaths a year by 2050.

Speaking at the G7 summit in Japan, Cameron said that the issue was a priority for him and pledged to halve the number of inappropriate prescriptions, as well as halve the number of drug-resistant bloodstream infections acquired by patients in hospital, by 2020.
