Only 10,000 patients registered out of area since practice boundaries were abolished

The scheme was first proposed by the Labour government in March 2010 with an aim to widen patient choice by allowing them to register with practices that were more suitable for them.

An IPSOS Mori poll from 2007, said: “Six per cent of people in this survey said they would want to register with a practice near their work and 18 per cent said they wanted to register with a different practice in their local area.”

With only 10,000 patients registered with practices away from their homes since January, the Local Medical Committees Conference in London last week voted to abolish the scheme.
