Coronavirus: UK hospital deaths beyond 20,000
The number of people who have died with coronavirus in UK hospital has now surpassed the 20,000 mark.
The Department of Health and Social Care announced on the 25 April that a further 813 people have died with coronavirus in UK hospitals. It was only in March that Sir Patrick Vallance, the government chief scientific adviser, said that keeping deaths below 20,000 in this country would be a ‘good outcome’.
Those latest figures indicate that a total of 20,319 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus. It has been 51 days since the first coronavirus-related death was announced in the UK.
The government's figures do not account for deaths that have happened in care homes, at home, in hospices or elsewhere in the community. These are measured separately by the Office for National Statistics, based on death certificates.
