The British Medical Association (BMA) has suspended a series of five-day junior doctor strikes, which were planned to take place in October, November and December, following concerns over patient safety.
The junior doctors’ committee of the BMA has maintained that it remains in dispute with the government over its plan to impose a new contract, but has suspended the strikes after a wide-ranging debate amongst junior doctors.
Dr Ellen McCourt, chairwoman of the BMA junior doctors committee, commented: "We still oppose the imposition of the contract and are now planning a range of other actions in order to resist it, but patient safety is doctors' primary concern and so it is right that we listen and respond to concerns about the ability of the NHS to maintain a safe service.
"We hope the government will seize this opportunity to engage with junior doctors and listen to the range of voices from across the NHS raising concerns about doctors' working lives and the impact of the contract on patient care."

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
