Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock has published his annual assessment of NHS England for 2017 to 2018 and 2018 to 2019.
The assessment, which rates the NHS against objectives as laid out in the multi-year mandate, shows that NHS England has met or is making good progress towards 89 per cent of the deliverables for 2017 to 2018 and 2018 to 2019.
First operational in April 2017, the assessment shows progress has been made across many areas, including: mental health; maternity care; diabetes prevention; and preparing to embed genomics into routine care.
However, the assessment shows more needs to be done to reduce waiting times to meet core patient access standards set out in the NHS Constitution, including A&E, 62-day cancer and the referral to treatment waiting time standard.
Hancock said: “The NHS is this country’s most valued public service and we’re rightly supporting it with an extra £33.9 billion a year in vital funding by 2023 to 2024 as part of the NHS Long Term Plan. We want to ensure this money benefits the frontline to help them deliver a sustainable and efficient health service across the country and we will be working with the NHS to safeguard our nation’s health for generations to come.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
