One-stop cancer clinics diagnosing more patients

A new study from the University of Oxford has found that one-stop clinics for patients with symptoms that could indicate cancer are seeing three times more patients diagnosed on the same day when compared with multi-stop clinics.

Published in Oxford Family Practice, the research says that there was a ‘significant reduction’ in the referral to appointment waiting time within one-stop clinics, with an average decrease of 75 days to just 15. Researchers also report that the clinics resulted in fewer patients needing additional appointments compared to multi-stop pathways.

The paper claims that ‘significantly more patients referred to one-stop clinics were also diagnosed on the same day’, 79.2 per cent compared to 24.7 per cent at multi-stop clinics.

In April, NHS England announced plans for the creation of 10 new 'one-stop shop' cancer diagnosis centres for patients with non-specific symptoms, guaranteeing a diagnosis within two weeks of the patient's first appointment.
