Leeds council enforces £8m cut to public health
Leads City Council has revealed its latest round of cuts, which are set to total a reduction of almost £8m, leading GP practices in the area to worry they will ‘struggle to cope’.
The Council announced a series of cuts, including a reduction of £3.9m in 2016-17 and £1.1m in 2017-18, in addition to the £2.8m cuts to public health, due to take place by the end of the current financial year.
Furthermore, the Council still has to find an added £600,000 in savings by April, with reports suggesting Leeds’ only HIV support service, run by BHA Leeds Skyline, could lose its contract.
The Council has already cut £2.2m from 22 public health services including smoking cessation services, worth £127,000 and £25,000 from sexual health services.
Councillor Lisa Mulherin, executive member for health, well-being and adult services, said the cuts are ‘likely to be followed by more reductions in subsequent years’ in order to cope with a £650m deficit for healthcare services.
Dr Richard Vautrey, assistant medical secretary of Leeds LMC, told Pulse that there is a ‘fear that the currently under pressure GP and community service would struggle to cope with any further cuts, particularly of this magnitude, and the focus on public health for the population we serve would be compromised as a result’.
