Increase in adult carers feeling stressed

NHS Digital has revealed that six out of every ten carers reported feeling stressed in 2018-19, an increase from the previous year.

The survey of 50,800 adult carers in England also found that the percentage of carers who reported feeling depressed increased from 43.4 per cent in 2016-173 to 45.1 per cent in 2018-19.

More than three quarters of people surveyed said that they spend over 20 hours per week looking after the cared-for person, with 38.7 per cent spending over 100 hours per week on their caring duties.

Of all the carers surveyed, 77.8 per cent reported ‘feeling tired’ (an increase from 76 per cent in
2016-17) and 66 per cent said that they experienced ‘disturbed sleep’ (an increase from 64 per cent in 2016-17).
