£300 million announced for dementia research

The Prime Minister has said this funding is to fight one of the biggest global health and social care challenges.

It has been reported that the annual research in the UK is expected to double by 2025.

The fund is expected to rely on a mix of public, private and charity sector donations to finance some of the most promising research projects.

Announcing the plan, the Prime Minister, who first launched the dementia challenge in 2012, said: "Dementia is one of the greatest challenges of our lifetime, and I am proud that we are leading the world in fighting it.

"Because of the growing strength of our economy, we can invest in research and drug-development, as well as public understanding, so we defeat this terrible condition and offer more hope and dignity for those who suffer.

"That way, we can help make Britain a country that offers security in retirement for all."
