GPs offered rates of £90 an hour to work unsociable hours

Dr Ivan Bennet, pioneer of the Manchester seven-day access scheme, divulged that his CCG is paying considerable rates to employees for evening and weekend shifts, which is expected to see a wider roll out across Greater Manchester.

Dr Bennet, clinical director at NHS Central Manchester CCG, said: “We pay about £180 per session, for two hours.”

Dr Bennet also claimed that the CCG found it “easier to recruit GP’s coming out of training” because Manchester has “relatively, more training practices than other parts of the country”.

Dr Peter Graves, chief Executive of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Local Media Committee (LMC), remarked that “£90 per hour is somewhat higher than the minimum wage” and results in an “annual salary of £176,000”.

However Dr Bennet advised ‘Pulse’ that “the payments are for extended hours, not for normal in-hours practice and so it doesn’t really relate to those sorts of sums”.

“It is reasonable to pay extra for working unsocial hours. Actually, many partners receive that sort of profit share anyway.”
