NHS's £165 million Papworth Hospital delays opening
Cambridge’s £165 million Papworth Hospital will open five months later than planned.
NHS bosses have decided to delay the opening of Papworth Hospital to allow more time for the equipping stage of the project, during which time major medical equipment and IT infrastructure will be installed.
The hospital was originally planned to open in April 2018 but will now open in September of that year.
This means the NHS will be able to make some additional structural changes to the building to ensure the latest, most high-tech equipment is installed wherever possible.
The Trust has recently approved a £40 million investment programme to provide equipment and infrastructure for the hospital, including: five state-of-the-art operating theatres, five catheter laboratories and two hybrid theatres; two new CT scanning systems; two MRI scanners; three Siemens Ysio Max X-ray systems; a pharmacy robot; new IT solutions; and a new self check-in system for outpatients and a room and hot desk booking system for staff.
Stephen Posey, chief executive at Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: "This investment demonstrates our absolute commitment to equipping the new hospital with the very latest medical and IT equipment and supporting our staff to deliver the best possible service to patients.
"I have no doubt that this investment programme will make our new hospital one of the best-equipped in the UK, helping us to continue to build our reputation as a world-leading cardiothoracic hospital."
