New proposals by the Department of Health (DoH) include measures to name cosmetic surgery clinics in England which do not meet standards.
The DoH is launching an eight-week consultation on to expand the rating programme run by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The proposals recommend that the ratings system should cover facilities offering services such as pregnancy termination services and substance misuse advice.
Furthermore, the government believes independent community health providers, ambulance services, dialysis units, and cosmetic surgery clinics should be rated.
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt commented: “Anyone who chooses to have a cosmetic procedure should have high quality and safe care - and that's why we have a tough regulator in place to help people make an informed decision.
“Our proposals to extend the CQC's powers to rate more providers are an important step forward in improving standards and will help to end the lottery of poor practice in parts of the cosmetic industry."
