Charity calls for more research into heart disease
The British Heart Foundation in Wales has called for more research to be carried out on heart disease to source improved treatments for patients suffering from the condition.
Ruth Coombs, head of the charity, cited heart disease as Wales’ ‘single biggest killer’, and maintained that increased research into the condition would ultimately ‘translate into better treatment for patients’.
The news comes after data from the Heart Disease Annual Report, showed that deaths from the health condition have fallen from just over 12,000 in 2005 to just over 8,800 in 2014.
Welcoming the decline in deaths, Vaughan Gething, health secretary for Wales, said: “The steady decline we've seen in the rate of people dying from all cardiovascular disease, alongside the fact that fewer people are suffering from heart disease, is something we're proud of.
"There's always further work to be done and the report outlines where improvement is needed. We'll take that on board and will build on the positive progress we've seen so far."
