In the first 24 hours after its launch the petition attracted more than one signature per second, quickly reaching the 10,000 target that requires the government to release a statement. The petition has now gained over 150,000 signatures, surpassing the 100,000 vote threshold that requires Parliament to consider it for debate.
A separate petition calling for Hunt to resign was also launched independently on change.org and has reached over 98,000 signatures.
The petitions come after NHS workers became angered by Hunt’s speech on 16 July when he said that he would impose a contract on junior doctors to ensure they worked weekends if they could not reach an agreement and also accused the BMA of being out of touch.
