Queen’s Speech implements new patient safety laws

The Queen’s Speech has unveiled new laws which could give official powers to the Health Service Safety Investigation Branch (HSSIB).

The Draft Patient Safety Bill would enable HSSIB to carry out independent and impartial investigations into patient safety risks in the NHS in England. It would establish the body officially, helping to ‘improve how the NHS investigates and learns from mistakes’. It would also legislate against the disclosure of confidential information held in connection with an investigation led by HSSIB.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt indicated at Confed17 that the government’s priorities over the next year will be a continued focus on safety improvements.
