NHS award winning SPT team to be scrapped

The NHS England Strategic Projects Team (SPT) consisting of a group of multi-million pound contract consultants is set to be shut down, after concerns were raised about its work.

The SPT was set up in 2009 to develop the first franchise-run NHS Hospital and has claimed to deliver ‘over £6 billion of major projects’. Its previous contracts include the Hinchingbrooke Hospital franchise and the five-year £800 million UnitingCare contract for older people's service in Cambridgeshire.

The team also worked on the NHS Friends and Family Test, a patients ratings system aimed at improving nursing care.

However, many of the projects were left unfinished, including the 10 year Hinchingbrooke Hospital contract, where the circle withdrew from the agreement, just three years into the deal, saying the franchise was ‘no longer viable’, after the hospital was placed in special measures.

Commenting on the news, Andrew MacPherson, the SPT's managing director, said the unit had been ‘seeking an alternative host’ since September and the team intended to ensure existing commitments were ‘fully discharged to completion’.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "In the light of recent NAO and NHS England investigations we have real concerns about the work of the Strategic Projects Team, which as a result is going to be closed down as an offshoot of the Arden and GEM CSU."
