IAPT programme witnesses 50 per cent recovery rate

New statistics from NHS Digital have revealed that more than half of courses of treatment for anxiety and depression ended in a patient’s recovery last year.

Marking the first financial year when the recovery rate passed 50 per cent, the figures show that of the 1,440,000 referrals to talking therapies in 2017-18, 1,010,000 referrals began a course of treatment, with 555,000 finishing treatment.

The Psychological Therapies: Annual Report on the use of IAPT services reveals that 89.1 per cent of people were seen within six weeks for their first course of treatment, up from 87.5 per cent in 2016-17, representing the highest proportion in a financial year.

As well as the 50.8 per cent recovery stat for people who completed a course of treatment, a total of 66.4 per cent of patients showed reliable improvement after undergoing psychological therapy. The percentage of people seen within 18 weeks also increased from 98.2 per cent in 2016-17 to 98.8 per cent in 2017-18.
