Five trusts agree data deal with Google

Five NHS trusts have signed up to transfer their existing data deals with DeepMind to its parent company Google.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, the Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust and University College London have all agreed to sign up with Google Health UK, with the aim of securely accessing their patients’ latest test results from their mobile devices.

Taunton and Somerset has also made the move but will not be using the Streams app following a pilot in 2018.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust began rolling out Streams in January 2019, having entered into a partnership with DeepMind in December 2016, giving clinicians’ real-time access to patients’ test results without having to leave their bedside to log into a computer, allowing them to make faster clinical decisions. The app is already bringing real benefits to patients and staff, with the time saved allowing clinicians greater focus on direct patient care.

Similar to a breaking news alert on a mobile phone, Streams notifies nurses and doctors immediately when test results show a patient is at risk of acute kidney injury, and provides all the clinical information they need to take action.

DeepMind was controversially handed 1.6 million patient health records by the Royal Free Hospital despite no patient having given their consent for their data to be shared or used in this way.
