Sleep diagnostic tests by NHS doubles

Figures revealed by the NHS show that the number of tests carried out to diagnose people with sleep disorders across England has doubled over the past decade.

Data shows that 147,610 tests were conducted last year, compared to the 69,919 carried out in 2007-08.

The sleep diagnostic tests are designed to identify sleep apnoea, which causes people to stop breathing during sleep.

Sleep apnoea, according to the NHS, is the most common sleep disorder. It is caused when the muscles and soft tissue in the throat relax, causing obstruction in the airways. The lack of oxygen to the brain causes those who suffer from sleep apnoea to wake up or have regular interruptions to their sleep. Loud snoring, gasping and grunting whilst asleep are common symptoms of the condition.
