The Department of Health (DoH) has announced that the Health and Social Care Information Centre has changed its name to NHS Digital, to build on the role it plays in directly supporting the NHS and social care services.
As part of the change, the DoH has also appointed Noel Gordon as the new chair for NHS Digital.
NHS Digital will continue its work as the national provider of information, supplying data and IT systems for commissioners, analysts and clinicians in health and social care.
The group publishes more than 260 statistical publications per year; provides a range of specialist data services; manages informatics projects and programmes; and develops and assures national systems against appropriate contractual, clinical safety and information standards.
According to the DoH the new name ‘NHS Digital: Information and technology for better health and care’, is aimed at bettering public recognition, confidence and trust.
Commenting on the move, George Freeman, Minister for Life Sciences said: “Healthcare in the 21st century is going digital with improved treatment and care, and with huge benefits for patient safety.
The newly named NHS Digital will provide important information and IT services to ensure better care for patients.
“This is an exciting time for NHS leadership in medical technology and NHS Digital will help to develop the NHS’s ability to deliver modern services. I’m pleased that Noel Gordon has agreed to lead NHS Digital as the organisation’s new chairman.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
