Sheffield NHS spends £340,000 on translators

Reports have suggested that hospital bosses in Sheffield have spent nearly £350,000 on translators in the NHS over the past year, with translators needed for 72 different languages in that time.

Freedom of information requests says that the total £341,601 figure for translator spend was a 63 per cent increase from the £208,575 spent five years ago. Leading figures for health in the region have said that the increase is a likely result of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals’ NHS foundation trust being made responsible for community health services, as well as normal hospital services.

According to The Star, a spokesperson from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “Primarily the costs of interpreting have risen because the Trust is now responsible for community health services as well as hospital services. This has increased the number of patients we care for by many thousands and so as you would expect some of those patients also require interpreting services.”
