Mental health recovery linked to deprivation, data suggests

Official figures from NHS Digital has shown the likelihood of recovering from a mental heath problem is strongly linked to deprivation.

In a report, Psychological Therapies: Annual Report on the use of IAPT services , it cited figures which indicated: over 200,000 referrals were received from the most deprived 10 per cent of areas, compared with under 92,000 from the least deprived area; whilst 55 per cent of patients from the least-deprived areas recovered, only 35 per cent of those in the most deprived areas did so.

NHS Digital highlighted that there were 1.4 million new referrals for treatment in 2015/16, with over 950,000 patients entering treatment. Of these, 81.3 per cent waited less than six weeks and 96.2 per cent less than 18 weeks.
