Number of people stopping smoking falls

The number of people who self-reported quitting smoking using NHS Stop Smoking Services has fallen for a fifth year in a row.

The NHS Digital figures show that the number of people setting a quit date fell for the fifth consecutive year to 307,507 in 2016/17, representing a decrease of 15 per cent on the previous year. The number of successful self-reported quitters also fell for the fifth consecutive year to 155,875, a decrease of 16 per cent on 2015/16.

NHS Stop Smoking Services offer support to help people quit smoking, including intensive support through group therapy or one-to-one support.
