Sugar tax to be included in childhood obesity strategy

The childhood obesity strategy for England is expected to include details of a tax on sugary drinks, the BBC has reported.

With sources claiming the plan will be published on the 18 August, the BBC understands that it will include measures to cut sugar in food and drink by 20 per cent.

The sugar tax was first mentioned by then Chancellor George Osborne in March, and is set to come into effect in April 2018, applying to companies who produce drinks with added sugar.

With the publication long awaited, charities have been calling for wide-ranging measures, including: restrictions on television advertisements; changes to rules on cut price promotions of junk food; and a greater focus on exercise. However, curbs on junk food advertising and cheap supermarket deals are unlikely to be discussed.

Statistics suggest one in 10 children in England is obese at the start of primary school.
