Hunt fires back at the BMA

Hunt said: “My frustration isn’t with doctors. I’ve yet to meet a doctor who doesn’t want to move to seven-day working. They are all very enthusiastic. The Royal colleges support this, but I can’t hide my frustration with the BMA.”

Hunt underlined that, despite capacity problems, it was “essential to introduce a seven-day NHS across primary and secondary care”.

BMA Chair Mark Porter said of Hunt's original interview with the BBC in which the health secretary claimed that Monday to Friday culture’ in parts of the NHS has ‘tragic consequences: "The announcement is nothing more than a wholesale attack on doctors to mask the fact that for two years the government has failed to outline any concrete proposals for introducing more seven-day hospital services. The health secretary has questions to answer. How does he plan to pay for it? How will he ensure there isn’t a reduction in mid-week services or fewer doctors on wards Monday to Friday? Yet again there are no answers.
