Clinicians with leadership potential not being identified

A new report has told the NHS to look at the ‘reward and recognition’ of senior leadership roles if it wants to encourage more doctors into senior leadership positions.

Barriers and enablers for clinicians moving into senior leadership roles, published by the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management and commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), analysed how the NHS can increase the numbers of clinicians moving into the health system’s most senior leadership roles, warning that it will not happen spontaneously.

The report recommends that Health Education England help establish a national programme for identifying, tracking, supporting and developing leadership and management talent from across the clinical professions.

Studying current rewards for leadership, the faculty claims that the ‘reward and recognition’ of senior leadership roles should be re-examined, arguing that remuneration packages do ‘not balance in favour of senior leadership as opposed to continued clinical practice’ for doctors.

The report also suggests that the NHS Leadership Academy should develop a resource, establishing the career options for clinical professionals considering a move into senior leadership and that professional regulators should set out clearly how senior leaders can maintain their license to practise while undertaking a management role if they wanted.
