Care delays putting pressure on hospitals

An increasing rise in waits for care services is putting extra pressure on the NHS in England, hospital bosses have warned.

NHS England data for the month of July showed that waits for care topped 61,000 days for hospital patients, a figure which has nearly doubled over the last two years (33,000 in July 2014).

Patients, often elderly and frail, can only be discharged by hospitals when there is support available in the community, but cuts to town hall care budgets in recent years has seen councils unable to offer immediate or substantial care.

Delays discharging patients then increases the pressure on hospitals as finding space for new patients who need to be admitted becomes more difficult. The increase in care delays has been four times greater than the rise in NHS-related delays.
