A&E miss emergency 999 call target

Performance data from NHS England has shown that ambulances have missed their target for responding to life-threatening calls, for a year.

The target for crews to reach patients having cardiac arrests or people who have stopped breathing (Red 1 calls) is set at within eight minutes. However, statistics from May showed that less than 75 per cent of emergency cases were within the target.

Similarly the target for Red 2 calls, signalling other life-threatening cases such as strokes, has not been met since January 2014. For the month of May, 70.5 per cent of Red 1 calls were met in eight minutes, while 65 per cent were met within eight minutes.

The figures found that targets for A&E, cancer care and routine operations have also been missed, while delays discharging patients from hospital have reached record levels.

NHS England has claimed part of the problem is due to the rising number of calls, which have increased by seven per cent compared to the previous year.
