NHS England misses A&E waiting time targets

NHS England has recorded its worst ever performance for A&E waiting times for the second consecutive month, according to new data.

The official statistics show that 224,116 patients were left waiting more than the maximum four hours to be admitted transferred or discharged. This continues a worrying trend of increasing waiting times, with 212,136 having to wait more than the four hour target in January.

Only 81.6 per cent of patients were seen within the four hour window, which is considerably less than the 95 per cent target.

On average, people waiting more than four hours in A&E departments has risen by more than 70 per cent over the past year.
