BMA poll highlights retirement dilemma

The survey is the second concerning report from the BMA in the space of a week, following findings suggesting that excessive workloads were harming care. This report, focusing on the effects of the rising demands, found that 34 per cent were considering retirement within the next five years, 28 per cent of those working full-time were considering moving to part-time.

The survey also showed that nine per cent of GPs were considering moving abroad and seven per cent were considering completely changing profession. Issues such as work related stress, unmanageable workloads and un-resourced work was highlighted as key factors behind the results.

Chaand Nagpaul, BMA GP's committee chair, said: "It is clear that incredible pressures on GP services are at the heart of this problem, with escalating demand having far outstripped capacity."

He continued: "GPs are overworked and intensely frustrated that they do not have enough time to spend with their patients, especially the increasing numbers of older people with multiple and complex problems who need specialised care."
