Welsh pregnant women urged to receive flu jab

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) and Public Heath Wales have issued a statement encouraging pregnant women, who are more vulnerable to infection, to get vaccinated against the flu.

The bodies warned that pregnant women who catch the flu are more likely to go into labour early and will have an increased risk of stilbirth and of their baby becoming ill in the first week.

Helen Rogers, director of RCM, said it ‘strongly recommends’ pregnant women have the vaccination, saying they can have it ‘at any stage during their pregnancy’.

She added: ”We also urge midwives and other health professionals to have the vaccination to protect themselves, their family and the people they care for from infection as well.”
