ComRes predict 'quick win' gains for NHS

Polling company ComRes has suggested that the hung Parliament could see more money available for the NHS and increased funding for non-controversial health and care initiatives.

Speaking at an event for NHS Confederation associates at Confed17, Rachel Skevington Britton, head of healthcare research at ComRes, explained how the NHS being a top voter priority, even edging over Brexit, could place it in a strong position for additional funding.

With no clear majority declared after the 8 June election, ComRes predict that a ‘weakened government’ will favour ‘quick wins’ and leave ’difficult decisions on health and social care to the next Parliament’.

Such difficult decisions could also be applied to controversial measures that the Conservative may now ditch, including the recent unpopular ‘Dementia tax’ proposal. Given that devolved status of health care in Northern Ireland, Skevington Britton also told delegates that she doe snot foresee the Democratic Unionist Party, who have held talks with the Conservatives over an unofficial coalition, having too much say over health policy.
