Johnson says NHS is ‘top priority’ after election win
The Conservative Party has won a working majority in the 2019 General Election, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson has insisted the NHS is his ‘top priority’.
Despite a SNP resurge north of the border, Boris Johnson's party has secured the 326 seats necessary to form Parliament, actually returning with 364 seats, with one left to declare. Celebrating his victory, Johnson declared that the victory has ‘smashed the roadblock’ and ‘ended the gridlock’, and can now deliver the Tory manifesto with a ‘powerful new mandate’.
Johnson made the health service vow despite repeated attempts by Jeremy Corbyn to raise the issue of selling the NHS, with his party having promised to recruit 50,000 more nurses and 6,000 more GPs, as well as build 40 new hospitals.
Speaking after he was re-elected in Uxbridge, west London, with a slightly higher majority, the Prime Minister said: "It does look as though this One Nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done."
The election victory means the Conservatives will have their biggest majority at Westminster since Margaret Thatcher's 1987 election victory. Conversely, Labour is facing its worse defeat since 1935.
