Cancer waiting times 'at worst level ever'

New figures have shown that the key cancer target has been missed by a record margin in England, with only 78.2 per cent of patients seen within the intended 62 days in July.

This is the worst performance since records began in October 2009 and means that more than 3,000 people waited longer than two months for treatment to begin. The NHS target of 85 per cent was last hit in December 2015.

The cancer treatment figures mirror performance targets across the health sector, with key targets for A&E and planned operations also continually missed. Nearly 504,000 were waiting more than the 18-week target time for non-urgent operations.
