Brazil has declared an end to a national emergency over the Zika virus after a sharp decrease in cases, 18 months after the disease was made a world emergency by the The World Health Organisation (WHO).
Statistics showed the number of cases of Zika dropped by 95 per cent between January and April, compared to the same period a year ago.
The virus has been linked to the birth of babies with severe birth defects, including abnormally small heads.
The threat was at its peak as Brazil prepared to host the 2016 Olympics, leading many would-be travellers to cancer their trips to Zika-infected regions.
The WHO lifted its own international emergency in November last year.
Adeilson Cavalcante, the secretary for health surveillance at Brazil’s health ministry, said: “The end of the emergency doesn’t mean the end of surveillance or assistance. The health ministry and other organisations involved in this area will maintain a policy of fighting Zika, dengue and chikungunya.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
