A neurosurgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust has produced the first ever 360 virtual reality film showing a patient undergoing surgery to treat life-threatening brain aneurysms.
Working with FundamentalVR, Dr Alex Alamri published the film as the first in a series of operations, part of the 'Brainbook' project, produced with Chris Uff, providing rare insight into the reality of neurosurgery.
The project saw an array of 360 HD cameras combined with head-mounted HD cameras capturing behind-the-scenes surgery from the point of view of both the patient and surgeon. The video moves from the eyes of the patient to the eyes of the surgeon as the operation begins.
Alarm said: “I hope that Brainbook will demystify neurosurgery, making it accessible by inviting people to explore our operating theatres and ask questions about what they see. We want to help people get up close to experience what really goes on during operations. It would be great if we help inspire more junior doctors as well as young people considering careers in health professions. Of course, we couldn’t do this without the fantastic support of our patients to whom we are incredibly grateful.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
