New health and care services deal in Buxton

A new deal has been struck to secure 21st century health and other public sector facilities in the High Peak area.

A partnership led by the NHS with other public sector bodies has agreed a deal worth almost £1.8 million to purchase part of the old Buxton Water site next to the railway station in Buxton, with thanks to Nestlé Waters UK.

The deal means almost two thirds of the site will become a new base for NHS and other public sector services, as part of the building set to serve Buxton and its surrounding areas for generations to come.

Contracts have been exchanged for the other portion of the site with McCarthy and Stone, the UK’s leading retirement house builder, who are proposing to develop specialist extra care retirement accommodation there.

The new development is part of long term NHS plans to provide more care out of traditional hospital settings and closer to people’s homes, in line with the Better Care Closer to Home programme of work.

William Jones, chief operating officer for Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, the lead organisation for the project, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have secured this ground-breaking deal for local people, with special thanks to Andrew Bingham, the former MP who first approached us with the idea. We know that Buxton Hospital, Cavendish Hospital and other NHS buildings in the town are somewhat dated and both situated on opposing edges of the town, so this deal will mean we can develop a fantastic centrally-located facility to house a range of services all under one roof. Together with the local GPs and other NHS organisations, we are keen to work closely with our local communities to achieve the full potential of this exciting development. I expect it will take three to four years to complete.” “

Tony Ashton, leader of High Peak Borough Council, said: “I very much welcome the opportunity for various public services to be brought together on this key central site in the town where they will be readily accessible to local residents."
