Healthcare Environmental Services (HES) has been stripped of NHS contracts after hundreds of tonnes of clinical waste from hospitals was allowed to pile up at its sites.
The firm, which removed waste from a number of hospitals in England and Scotland, was deemed to have ‘failed to demonstrate that they were operating within their contractual limits’, with Health Minister Stephen Barclay confirming that 15 NHS trusts served termination notices to HES to formally terminate their contracts, with new arrangements being considered to replace the service.
Barclay told MPs that Mitie will ‘step in and replace this service’ to help NHS services operate as normal.
The Environment Agency said HES was in breach of its environmental permits at four of its six sites which deal with clinical waste - by having more waste on site than their permit allows and storing waste inappropriately. It has since launched a criminal investigation.

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
