NHS deficits hit £930 million within three months

Regulators have voiced concerns that the figures showing the financial performance from April to June demonstrate the sector is “under massive pressure” and cannot afford to continue as it is.

The £930 million spent covers hospital, mental health, ambulance and some community services and accounts for approximately two-thirds of the NHS’s £116 billion budget.

Last year, NHS trusts reached a deficit of £820 million and were forced to remove money from the Treasury and capital budget in order to balance its books. It has already been suggested that the deficit among the 239 NHS trusts could top £2 billion. Figures released by Monitor and the Trust Development Authority have confirmed the NHS is on track to hit the suggested deficit. The regulators have also claimed that financial performance tends to improve as the year progresses.

Last year, the amount of deficit accumulated in the first three months of the financial year accounted to £451 million, a significantly lower debt compared to this year. David Bennet, chief executive of Monitor, said: “Today’s figures reiterate the sector is under massive pressure and must change to counter it.

"The NHS simply can no longer afford operationally and financially to operate in the way it has been and must act now to deliver the substantial efficiency gains required."

The regulators were concerned about the financial performance of NHS for some time and have wrote to trusts in order to persuade them to consider where they can make more savings. However, most experts believe that the NHS has little wriggle room to improve its performance.
