Simon Stevens has announced national funding for a new mental health support scheme to cover all doctors working for the NHS in England.
The NHS England chief executive, speaking at a ‘Wounded Healers’ conference, said the scheme would cover approximately 110,000 more doctors, in addition to those already supported, and will continue to build on the success of a similar project for GPs and trainees suffering from mental health issues that was launched in early 2017.
Stevens also detailed how the NHS long term plan, due to be published this Autumn, will contain a renewed focus on mental health of both patients and staff.
Stevens said: “The NHS is significantly improving mental health treatment for patients, but sometimes their doctors need our support too. This new funding will help all NHS doctors by providing a safe, confidential non-stigmatising service to turn to when they are struggling and need help. It means the NHS will now have the most comprehensive national mental health support offer to doctors of any country’s health system in the world. Ultimately it will be patients and not just their doctors who will benefit.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
