The three year initiative, which will go live later this year, will provide patients with additional expert pharmacist support in their GP surgery. This will enable extra help in managing long-term conditions, specific advice for those with multiple medications and better access to health checks.
The pharmacists will be employed directly by the general practice to help patients, while also easing GP workload and improving communication between general practice, hospitals and community pharmacists. The scheme will focus on areas of greatest need where GPs are under greatest pressure, and aims to build on the success of GP practices already employing pharmacists in patient-facing roles.
Simon Stevens said: “This has the potential to be a win-win-win for patients, their GPs and for pharmacists. Tapping into the skills of clinical pharmacists should help expand care and relieve some of the pressure that GPs are clearly under. This isn’t a silver bullet but it is a practical and constructive contribution to the wider challenge.”
Dr Krishna Kasaraneni, BMA Chair GP training, education and workforce subcommittee said: “It is important that we look at how pharmacists can work more efficiently within general practice and relieve some of the unprecedented pressure on GP services.
“We will need to look closely at how these pilots operate and ensure that the clinical benefits of the scheme are clear. Alongside the new funding that the BMA’s Northern Ireland GP committee has recently secured for pharmacy services in its area, this is an encouraging sign that the potential and importance of the pharmacy sector is being recognised.”

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
