12-hour trolley waits hit 1,000 in January

New figures have shown that January was one of the most difficult months on record for A&E units in England with the four-hour A&E target missed for the 30th month in a row.

The data from NHS England shows more than two million patients came to A&E during January, which is an increase of more than five per cent from the previous year. In total, 85.3 per cent of patients were seen in the required four hours, a slight improvement on the 85.1 per cent in December 2017.

However, more than 1,000 patients had to wait over 12 hours for admission.

Amid rising numbers of A&E attendances, a vast number of hospitals are cancelling routine treatments to try to relieve the pressure.
