Belfast Health Trust allocated £1m to send patients to private sector

According to a report by the BBC, the Belfast Health Trust has been allocated £1 million to send patients currently on waiting lists to be treated in the private sector.

The BBC report claimed that an email to medical staff directed them to refer ‘long waiting patients suitable for the independent sector’, adding that the money must be spent by the end of March 2017.

In particular, high priority should be given to patients on waiting lists requiring treatment for ‘spines, hip and knee, lower and upper limbs’.

It is hoped the funding will help stem hospital delays, which have resulted due to lacking hospital capacities and short staffing.

The £1 million funding does not include money to treat outpatients.
