BMA sees rise in membership following contract disputes

The disputes centre on new imposed seven-day contracts for junior doctors, which have sparked back and fourth arguments between Jeremy Hunt and healthcare professionals.

The new contracts come as part of government plans to roll out seven-day NHS access, but have faced opposition from healthcare professionals, who claim the imposed contracts will leave doctors over worked, resulting in reduced quality of care, and drive junior doctors out of the profession or abroad to find work.

On 30 September talks broke down between Dr Johann Malawana, BMA junior doctor committee chair, and Hunt, who failed to find a solution to the ongoing disputes.

The week following saw BMA membership increase by 5,400, bringing total membership to around 160,000.

Malawana said: “The unprecedented number of doctors joining the BMA and the thousands who have attended rallies across England is clear evidence of the anger and frustration felt by junior doctors.

“Until the government lifts the threat of contract imposition and gives the BMA the concrete assurances we require we will continue with the action junior doctors are demanding. The time is well overdue for Ministers to listen to what junior doctors are telling them.”
