No Zika cases from Olympics, WHO confirms

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed that there have been no cases of Zika among travellers or athletes at the Rio Olympics.

The news comes after health experts criticised the organisation for not calling for the Games to be postponed or moved to a low-risk area. However, WHO argued that its prediction that the Games would not fuel the spread of the Zika virus was being proved correct.

Peter Salama, head of WHO’s health emergency, said: "We don't have any confirmed cases of Zika amongst travellers or amongst athletes."

Salama added: "We are optimistic that the same risk assessment will hold and there will be little additional risks."

Nonetheless, WHO has maintained that Zika remains a global public health emergency and has advised that pregnant women should avoid travelling to the Games, due to its link to birth defects, and that visitors should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
