The chief executive of NHS has pledged personally to investigate the causes of rising medical indemnity costs

In a Q&A session following his speech at the NHS Confederation conference in Liverpool on 3 June, Simon Stevens pledged to take a wide-ranging approach to improving GP recruitment. Mr Stevens said “’I will take a look at that personally” and said the NHS may be able to tackle the issue at a national level after these issues where raised by Dr Bhatti.

At the UK LMC conference, which took place last month, Dr Bhatti, was speaking on behalf of the GP who was issued a £30,000 fee, warned that this could be a sign of things to come. He said: ‘This GP’s subscription expires from May but for most renewal is traditionally in August, so my concern is if this is the first of a new batch of price increases.” He added that the NHS will have to intervene as the quadrupled fee’s will result in “people are leaving the service, and leaving the country.”
