Funding to expand Cystic Fibrosis centre in Wales
The Welsh Government is investing an extra £4.7m to redevelop and expand the All Wales Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Centre at University Hospital Llandough.
The funding announced today will support redevelopment plans to expand and remodel the centre and comes as the Welsh Government has confirmed all eligible people with CF in Wales will be able to access medicines Orkambi® and Symkevi®.
First Minister Mark Drakeford said: "Everyone receiving care for complex illnesses like those here at the remarkable CF centre, should be able to do so in a safe and supportive environment.
"Nobody enjoys a hospital stay but if we can make that stay as comfortable, safe and as focused on the needs of the individual as possible, then this will have benefits for them, their families as well as those providing that care."
Demand for services has outgrown the current CF centre, which was commissioned in 1997, as a nine-bedded unit. The centre was recently reduced to seven beds due to new care guidelines on infection control.
The redevelopment will provide an extension to and refurbishment of the existing centre, resulting in an increase of beds to 16 and improved facilities, including new gymnasium rooms, treatment rooms and enhanced mechanical and electrical services.
Work is expected to begin in January 2020 with planned completion by November 2020. The unit is hoped to be fully operational by December 2020.
