NHS spend on management consultants falls by £42 million

NHS spending on management consultants has fallen by £42 million in the last year, according to figures from NHS Improvement.

The Department of Health claims that these figures are a result of spending controls announced in June 2015, which supported hospitals to improve finances by targeting ‘rip off’ staffing agencies.

Spend on management consultants dropped from £145 million in July-September 2014 to £103 million in July-September 2015, and NHS Improvement believes that these measures could potentially save up to £160 million by the end of the year.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “Our plans to clamp down on management consultants and rip-off staffing agencies are bearing fruit. Patients will see the reward with savings being reinvested in frontline patient care.

“I want the NHS to be the most efficient health system in the world and these figures show that, thanks to hardworking NHS staff and strong leadership, we can make savings and improve patient care at the same time.”
